The Austones
The Austones have been krawlin' around Austin since 2010, starting out on 6th Street, playing the blues from one end of the town to the other – they still appear at Friends Bar. Like many other blues bands, they were born in a garage, this one in Deep South Austin. The music is upbeat Chicago Style Blues, with a hint of Rock thrown in.
Kevin Cheney is the harp blastin' front man, a lead vocalist who just can't seem to stand still. Always high energy, he belts out the tunes he loves by blues greats like Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Slim Harpo, Lazy Lester, B.B. and Freddy King. Every now and then, he'll thrown in a little flute action that gives Kevin and the Krawlers a unique twist. Originally from New Hampshire, his growling vocals have prompted folks to ask, "Are you from Louisiana?"
Jeff Grant holds down the lead guitar duties and vocals as well. Jeff spent his formative years on the West Coast, mainly in the LA area, but now calls South Austin home. The rhythm section is varied depending on who's available – Dick Ross, Joe Boone, and original drummer Steve Royal are the usual suspects on drums, while Joe Zito, Jackie Newhouse, and Amber Lucile are often found on bass.
