Join Us for the "Blues is the Cure" Concert!

Nothing says “Austin” like Blues music, and the Austin Blues Society (ABS) has set its first live event of 2021 in a safe, socially distant outdoor environment. “Blues is the Cure Concert” is a joint effort of ABS and Harold McMillan, owner of Kenny Dorham’s Backyard, located at 1106 E. 11th St. The event has been rescheduled to

take place on Sunday, June 27, from 7p.m. to 10 p.m.

Scheduled to perform are the Matthew Robinson Band and Kathy and the Kilowatts.

Food trucks will be onsite for hungry guests, and while there will be no cover charge, bands will be paid, and ABS asks patrons to please plan to contribute donations for the bands.

Kathy and the Kilowatts is a recipient of the Best Acoustic Blues Award won at the 2018 ABS Heart of Texas Blues Challenge competition.

Robinson’s former band, Matthew Robinson and the Jelly Kings, placed first in the Best Band category at the 2015 ABS Heart of Texas Blues Challenge.

ABS was founded in 2006 by a group that includes Mark “Kaz” Kazamoff, a long-time member of the band that backs up Miss Lavelle White, a treasured Austin Blues singer. Before COVID-19 shutdowns, ABS held monthly jam nights at the Skylark Lounge, presented annual blues award events, and is now developing a “Blues in the Schools” programs. Jam nights are expected to begin again later in 2021.
